Dear parents,
First of all, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everybody.
This newsletter has a lot about culture, Christmas is a very important time all over the world. In Spain we celebrate Christmas Eve (Nochebuena) 24th Dec. and Christmas Day (Navidad) 25th, both days we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. Families spend time together, pray, play and have traditional dishes for lunch and dinner like: roast lamb, turkey, seafood, fish…and turrón as a sweet.
On the 31,New Year´s Eve.(Nochevieja)we eat 12 grapes, just a few seconds before 12 p.m. this event can be followed on T.V. from the Clock of Puerta del Sol in Madrid. It is said to have good luck for next year.
During all this time we have nativities and Christmas Trees in houses and public places, we listen to and sing carols (Villancicos)
We will come back to school the 4th of January. However in Spain the Christmas break goes until after the 7th. The night of the 5th we celebrate “The Three Wise Men Day”. So, I´ll tell you a bit about this tradition, which I find very cool for the kids. On that day we leave a clean and shiny shoe or boot by the Christmas tree with some good food for the wise Men and some water for the camels…if you have behaved well you will find gifts the next morning, if not, you could have a piece of coal (nowadays the coal is sweet and eatable).
Please
In every single village, town or city, the 5th of January there are parades, if you want to see a bit, this is one example in Medina de Pomar, my town. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDgXpxa9_4s
Talking about food, we eat “Roscón de Reyes” it can be filled with cream or with whipped cream and inside it has a Little surprise and a bean, if you get the first one you are lucky, if you get the second you´ll pay for the roscón. If you want to try it here is the recipe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBhRo3TiPw8
The kids have written a letter to the Three Wise Men, so we might have a present for the class. I. haven't explain them the whole story, I will when we are back in January. And they are welcome to bring a shoe to school. You can help me with that and remind them to bring a shoe.
In addition to all this fun, in January we´ll have our SUBJECTS, with the following:
MATH/ MATEMÁTICAS: we have worked a lot in addition, now we'll focus in the subtraction. Then, facts families and afterwards we´ll understand tens and ones, make tens and ones and count by ones and tens to 120.
LANGUAGE ARTS/LENGUAJE: We´ll review vocabulary about what´s around us, our house, our family and our neighborhood. We´ll review the types of nouns and words and start our reading program " Benchmark Adelante" where we will analyzing stories; characters, setting…
Thanks for reading at home with Razkids.
SCIENCE/CIENCIAS: During this month we´ll study the water cycle and some characteristics of animals.
ART/ARTÍSTICA: We´ll be observing different painting about water in different states and landscapes by some famous Spanish artists like: Sorolla,(who painted lot of water scenes) and Guillermo Sedano, a contemporany painter…
Thanks a lot for your help and for providing me the opportunity to learn with your kids.
See you next year, Mrs. Fernández.
